Work Place Bullying: PowerPoint

On June 28th, 2012 Mrs. Angie Whitaker came to speak to us about work place bullying. Work place bullying is bullying in your job. In my opinion the most important point she made in her PowerPoint were:

Bully- a "strong" person exerting power and control over a "weaker" person or a perceived threat.
Target- the victim of the bullying; becomes a target when they buy into the bullying

What you can do about work place bullying:
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Standards of operations
  • Document
  • Build Allies
  • Silent Supporters
  • Ignore Behavior
  • Confidant/HR/EAP
  • Upper management
  • Research websites
  • Florida Commission on Human Relations

The movie Antwone Fisher was about a temperamental young man in the navy with a violent history. His father was killed before he was born and his teenage mother, ended up arrested soon after and put in jail where she gave birth to him. He was then placed in an orphanage until she got out to claim him. When she never claimed him, Antwone was placed in a foster home at two years old ran by a religious couple Mr. and Mrs. Tate. There, Antwone faced abuse by Mrs. Tate mentally and physically for many years until he finally left the home at age fourteen. He decided to join the U.S. Navy to make something out of his life. However the rough life he had as child caused him to have a violent temper at this point.

After Attacking a fellow sailer he is sent to a physiatrist. Eventually Antowne opened up to him is advised to find his family, but Antwone refused. His physiatrist tells Antwone he's ending the sessions and feels Antwone needs to progress on his own. Antwone then breaks down and feels everyone has abandoned him. He goes to his best friends house and they go to the corner store. His friend pulls out a gun and aims it at the guy running the store. Antwone's friend turns his and a little and his shot and killed. Realizing he needs to find his parents to find closure, Antwone asks Cheryl to go with him to Cleveland. After a dead end at social services Antwone decides to return to the Tate household. There he confronts an older Nadine and Mrs. Tate about their abuses toward him. Mrs. Tate ultimately reveals Antwone's father's name: Edward Elkins.

After looking through multiple telephone books, Antwone comes into contact with his unt Annette. and visits her. Antwone learns his mother lives nearby, and goes to visit her. She sits in silence after he reveals to her that he's her firstborn. Antwone finds closure, forgives her, and leaves. When he returns to the Elkins household, he finds a feast prepared for him and finds the family he lost.
At the end of the film, Antwone visits Davenport and thanks him for everything. Davenport then replies that it is he who should be thanking Antwone. Davenport reveals to Antwone that he was slowly shutting down his life until the day he met Antwone. The movie draws to a close as Davenport and Antwone go to eat.'

I feel that Antwone has been through a great ordeal of trials he had to face. He didnt have a good childhood, he was always fighting, and his best friend was shot and killed right in front of his eyes. In contrast to this he was also determined to find out about his roots and reconnect with his true family.

Cyberbullying

The movie "Cyberbully" is about Taylor, a teenage girl who falls victim to online bullying, and the cost it takes on her as well as her friends and family. Taylor is a pretty 17-year-old student dealing with her parents' recent divorce and painfully aware of her lower social status in high school. When her mom gives her a computer for her birthday, Taylor is excited by the prospect of going online to meet new friends without her mother always looking over her shoulder.
However, Taylor soon finds herself the victim of betrayal and bullying while visiting a popular social website. Obsessed with the damaging posts, she begins to withdraw from her family and friends, including her life-long best friend, Samantha. Tormented and afraid to face her peers at school, Taylor is pushed to an extreme breaking point. It is only after this life-changing event that Taylor learns that she is not alone – meeting other teens, including a classmate, who has had similar experiences. Taylor's mom, reels from the incident and takes on the school system and state legislation to help prevent others from going through the same harrowing ordeal as her daughter.
In my opinion, I thought that the movie was brilliant, and the story plot really helped me realize what was appropriate, and inappropriate thing to do on the Internet.
